i immediately ran into 4 problems. one of them that big that i decide to write these few lines to warn you about it (since they are essential to me).

the all so new finder is not really well implemented as it seems. finder has problems connecting to samba shares. a working setup under 10.5 (Leopard) was:

• a Linux Server with samba shares
• user password needed for personal shares
• some shares read only for guests as well.

one of the shares that is accessible through a password is my time-machine share. on this net share i run backups from my mbp. see how to do that in this blog post. time machine connected to it automatically.

for leopard i had to add this to the smb.conf to fix issues:

# fixes weird leopard behavior
unix extensions = no

but for snow leopard i had to add this:

encrypt passwords = Yes

because the finder will not connect to servers without password encryption.

this allone did not fix the problem that i could not login. connection to shares that are open for guest users did show, shares that needed login did not.

as it turns out the finder has a little hidden feature called “Numeric passwords ONLY”. this means that you have to have a user account that authenticates with a password that only consists of numbers! as soon as i changed that i was able to mount my beloved shares again and time machine seems to work as well.

some users report that finder is quite picky about dns resolution as well… see the forms i linked about that.

the second little issue i had affects boxee. the apple remote seems to handle locks diffently or not at all. whenever is started boxee under 10.5 the apple remote was talking to boxee only. under 10.6 it also controlls itunes and front row whilst i run boxee in the foreground. not so cool!

a third little thing that did not work in leopard either is tether a mac with the htc hero. this apparently works out of the box for linux users but not for mac. what’s so hard about that?

a fourth little thing that annoys me is that the new quicktime has no more option to stay in full screen when the focus comes off. this is especially disruptive on dual head setups.

i really really hope that apple will soon release 10.6.2 and fix these problems. i don’t get how they could have overlooked these…

endlich! apple hat den gesamten iTunes store auf itunes plus umgestellt. jetzt gibt es alle songs ohne DRM. so sollte es sein. jetzt ist man nicht mehr eingesperrt wenn man seine musik nicht auf cds kaufen will. darunter haben nur die preise der neuen releases gelitten. die steigen jetzt auf 1,29 euro pro song. alte liedln werden aber günstiger und fallen auf bis zu 0,69 euro.

es stellt sich nur die frage ob die songs immer noch mit dem namen des käufers getaggt werden…

ein schritt in die richtige richtung! grossartig! jetzt fehlt nur noch eine itunes version für linux und die integration von anderen musikplayern.

beim firmware upgrade, das man sich um 8 euro kaufen muss, sind die programme die im jaenner dazugekommen sind schon dabei. das heisst man muss nicht beide updates kaufen. sehr angenehm. ausserdem sind die 8 euro wirklich leistbar.
dabei darf man nicht uebersehen dass man die ganzen gratis applikationen im app store gleich mitbekommt. darunter auch der instantmessenger von AIM (1.bild).

ein weiteres lustiges und vor allem praktisches neues feature ist der screenshot! dieser kann in jeder applikation zu jeder zeit aktiviert werden. einfach etwas laenger auf den home button clicken und sofort danach den lock button druecken. es wird dann ein screenshot in den fotos gespeichert. diesen kann man sich dann per email zuschicken. oder noch viel wichtiger auch anderen leuten zuschicken. das ist besonders praktisch wenn man zb einen treffpunkt ausmachen will. man oeffnet einfach die google maps setzt eine stecknadel und schickt den screenshot. fertig.

die video app laesst sich jetzt in beide richtungen drehen, aber immer noch nicht hochkant betrachten. (nein die kontrollknoepfe drehen sich auch, hier steht nur grad homer am kopf). neu ist auch ein kleiner fade out beim beenden der video app.

der taschenrechner wird im breitbildmodus zum wissenschaftlichen taschenrechner. sehr praktisch!

der app store ist sowohl ueber ipod als auch ueber itunes abrufbar. programme lassen sich unterwegs als auch am computer kaufen. das angebot ist im moment noch recht klein, wird aber sicher schnell wachsen.

die kleinen unnuetzen programme die ich im moment austeste sind:

Light
iPint (sehr lustig )
To Do
Cube Runner
zintin (leider nur am iphone zu brauchen)
NetNewsWire
und natuerlich AIM.

die apple tv hat jetzt diese features:

• rental – runterladen, innerhalb von 30 tagen anschauen. 24 stunden zeit den film so oft wie man will anzuschauen. kosten: $2.99 – 4.99. die haengen davon ab ob der film neu oder alt ist und ob er HD oder normalqualitaet hat.
• filme kaufen – die option die vielen abgegangen ist. kosten: etwa $15.
• flickr – fotos online browsen
• youtube – webclips im vollbild im wohnzimmer schauen.
• photos – vom heimrechner praesentieren
• podcasts – abonieren und anhoeren oder ansehen.
• tv shows – fernsehserien kaufen, ohne werbung ohne werbung!

stellt sich nur die frage wann der content und das filmverkaufen auch hier in good old europe einzug haelt.
die apple tv wird auf jeden fall immer interessanter. wenn sie noch einen satreceiver spendiert bekommt ueberleg ich mir sie zu kaufen.

die tastatur hat einen sehr angenehmen tastenanschlag, in etwa den eines laptops, vielleicht sogar noch einen geringeren weg als mein knapp 3 jahre altes powerbook.
was auch sehr praktisch ist sind die beiden usb stecker links und rechts unter dem keyboard. so kann man schnell seinen ipod zum laden anzapfen. sehr fein…

man kann dies mit einigen tools, ich habe bis jetzt cocktail verwendet, ändern.

oder man kann das auf einen art machen die gratis ist und sicher nur das macht was man will. einfach die conf files von mac os x im terminal bearbeiten.

$ defaults write com.apple.dock orientation -string right
$ defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string start

die orientation bestimmt an welcher seite des fensters das dock hängt. möglichen parameter sind [right|bottom|left|top].
das pinning sagt aus ob das dock am anfang, der mitte oder am ende der gewählten seite klebt.[start|middle|end]

auch muss man nach den änderungen das dock natürlich neu starten. das macht man mit:

$ killall Dock
